Winter-Ready with EASR Bodyshop Norwich

As winter approaches and brings colder temperatures, icy roads, and unpredictable British weather, now is the perfect time to prepare your car. Give your vehicle the best chance to stay safe, reliable, and ready for every journey.

By following our Winter Car Checklist, you can avoid common faults before they happen and reduce the chance of waking up to a flat battery or a missed service when you need your car the most.

1. Book a Full Service

Before winter sets in, book a comprehensive vehicle service. A trained mechanic can check your engine, brakes, steering, electrics, and safety systems. Early inspections reduce the risk of breakdowns during the cold months and can help you avoid expensive repairs later.

2. Battery and Charging System

Winter is tough on batteries. Colder temperatures reduce battery output, and heating, lights, and fans increase demand. If your battery is over five years old or you notice slow starting, get it tested. Check that your charging terminals are clean and corrosion-free. Your owner’s manual will show you where to find them if they’re not on the battery directly.

3. Antifreeze and Coolant

Your engine needs a 50-50 mix of coolant and antifreeze. Over time, this mix can become diluted. If it drops too low, the liquid can freeze and damage your engine. During a winter service, make sure your coolant is at the right level and properly mixed to keep the engine safe.

4. Tyres: Pressure and Tread

Tyres are critical for grip and control. As temperatures drop, tyre pressure decreases and roads become more slippery. Check your tyre pressure regularly and aim for at least 3 millimetres of tread depth in winter. This is more than the legal minimum but offers better traction. You might also consider switching to winter tyres, which provide better grip in cold or icy conditions.

5. Exterior Lights

Dirt, salt, and grime quickly reduce the effectiveness of your lights. Clean your headlights, fog lights, brake lights, indicators, and reflectors. Replace any blown bulbs and make sure there are no cracked lenses. Keeping your lights clean improves visibility and is also a legal requirement.

6. Windscreen and Wipers

Winter driving throws everything at your windscreen. Salt, grit, and road spray reduce visibility fast. Clean your windscreen inside and out and top up your screenwash with antifreeze. Inspect your wiper blades by running a finger along the edge to check for tears or cracks. Also look out for chips in the glass, as they can spread in cold temperatures and may need attention.

7. Prepare for Longer Trips

Check weather forecasts and traffic updates before setting off. Allow extra time for delays and avoid rushing. Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready with proper antifreeze levels and a stocked emergency kit in the boot. It’s better to be safe than stranded.

8. Emergency Winter Kit

It’s smart to carry a kit in your car during the colder months. Here’s what we recommend including:

  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Blanket or warm coat
  • Hi-vis vest or jacket
  • Small shovel
  • Screenwash and scraper
  • Non-perishable snacks and bottled water
  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • Paper map or road atlas

9. Breakdown Cover

Review your breakdown cover to make sure it’s valid and offers roadside assistance. Save the contact number in your phone or write it down. Knowing you have support if you break down gives real peace of mind in the cold.

10. Additional Safety Tips

Keep at least a quarter tank of fuel at all times. In cold weather, your car uses more fuel and running low could leave you stuck.

Learn what each of your dashboard warning lights means so you can react quickly. Make sure your brake pads, discs, and fluid are all in good condition. Also check drive belts like the alternator and fan belt. If they are worn or loose, get them replaced.

Watch road conditions closely while driving and avoid risky routes when you can. Stick to main roads, as they are more likely to be gritted and cleared.
